High-strength lightweight screed on the roof

A walk-on roof terrace at the exhibition center in Adelaide, South Australia, was to be retrofitted with a slope to prevent standing water on the waterproofing in the future. High traffic loads were to be expected on the area, so the original plan was to build up the slope with a cement screed. However, the additional load would have made it necessary to statically reinforce the roof structure, which would have involved enormous expense. As a cost-effective alternative, the contract was awarded to a system structure with the lightweight screed VELOSIT SC 241 from the East Westphalian building materials specialist VELOSIT GmbH & Co. KG. Thanks to the 40% weight saving compared to the conventional screed, the statics were sufficient for the structure.

Project Description

The existing waterproofing was removed and the surface milled over a total of 2,000 sqm of roof area. Due to the site conditions, the material had to be stored and the mixing equipment positioned on the roof. The screed was mixed in a compulsory mixer to an almost plastic consistency and laid in sections of 10 to 100 sqm. The areas were not contiguous and the gradient varied from 10 mm to a maximum layer thickness of 300 mm in some areas. The paving was carried out in one operation and no reinforcement was installed in the areas with a thickness of over 100 mm. In the edge areas, the slope was extended from 10 to 2 mm layer with VELOSIT RM 205.

After just one day, both materials had a compressive strength of well over 25 N/mm2 and could be used without restriction. The completely crack-free surface was later coated with PMMA roof waterproofing.

By using VELOSIT SC 241, the additional roof load due to the sloping screed could be reduced by 100 tons. The system was recognized as the most innovative roof structure by the Concrete Institute of Australia.

In the meantime, further projects with this structure have been put out to tender.
